PAANDU the VICEROY

(The N in this name is pronounced like 'n 'in 'on'. The D is pronounced like 'd'in 'do'.

Paandu was the son of queen Ambaalika begot from sage Vyaasa . He was younger to Dhritharaashtra . Though younger, he was the de facto king for Dhritharaashtra was blind. Though he ruled the kingdom and expanded it widely by his valor, he did all things as a viceroy to his brother. That fact of one being a de facto king and another a de jure one lead to a great rift between their sons for the right to the throne.

Paandu had two wives Kunthi and Maadri . Unfortunately he killed a hermit couple enjoying in the form of deer in a forest when he was in a hunting trip and was cursed by the dying hermit that touching his wife for sensual pleasures would kill him instantly. this made natural offspring to him from his wives inpossible. He later urged Kunthi to get children by other acceptable means and she invoked a manthra given to her by sage Durvaasa and got three sons Yudhishthira, Bheema and Arjuna from the gods Yama, Vaayu and Indra respectively. She also awarded the manthra to and Maadri too, who got twin sons Nakula and and Sahadeva from the gods Asvi's ( devine doctors ) . All these five sons were collectively called Paandavas.

Paandu got tempted on seeing his younger wife Maadri on a fine spring evening and met his untimely death. Maadri underwent Sathi and then Kunthi went to Hasthipuram with her sons.

Paandu's life shows us that bad hobbies like hunting lead to harm finally. He acted like an ideal trustee to the kingdom on behalf of his half-brother. Though he had every right and chance to ascend the throne himself thereby making his sons' way to the throne clearer, he did not do that - maybe, out of his respect to his brother - . Had he done so, the struggle for power that resulted in the worst clash would have been totally avoided .

No doubt, he remains an example of unselfishness.
