SAHADEVA (Youngest of the five Paandavas)

(As is very common in Mahaabhaaratham, many people have the same name. Another king was also named Sahadeva. He was Jaraasandha's son and ruler of Magadha provinces.)

Sahadeva and Nakula were the twin sons of Maadri and Paandu.(In this document, the phrase "The Twins" refers to only these two, but not to other twins like Vinda and Anuvinda etc.)

These two together with the three sons of Paandu and Kunthi were called Paandavas. Both Nakula and Sahadeva were manifestations of the divine doctors Asvi gods.

Sahadevaa was considered the best learned and wise. He was a terrific swordsman too.He was very obedient to Yudhishthira like his other brothers. His role in the Mahaabhaaratham was not that prominent as Bheema's or Arjuna's. He undertook the southern campaign before their Raajasooya. In the hall of that Raajasooya sacrifice, when Shishupaala protested against first honor being given to Krishna, Sahadeva turned furious and declared that he would place his foot on the opposers. From droupadi,he had a son named Shruthasena who was killed by Asvaththaama on the 18 th day night.

Folklore has various tales about his swordsmanship, wisdom and astrological knowledge.

In the end, he followed Yudhishthira in the renunciation walk and fell dead midway.

His obedience to his elder half-brothers and clean fraternity shown were really commendable.

"After praying to Naaraayana, Nara, Sarasvathi and Vyaasa, then one should recite the Jayam."
