SATHYA

Sathya was one of the eight principal wives of Krishna . The other seven were

  1. Rukmini
  2. Lakshana
  3. Jaambavathy
  4. Naagnajithi
  5. Kaalindi
  6. Bhadra
  7. Mithravinda
She was the daughter of a Yaadava chief Sathraajith who once unwarrantedly blamed Krishna with the slaying of his brother Prasena for a gold-yielding divine jewel named Shamanthakamani . Later Krishna disproved those allegations and traced the jewel and brought it back from its last possessor Jaambavan, a bear chief who in fact was a companion of Raama in Raamaayanam . But Krishna was to face a stiff fight from the old stalwart to get successful . Then Jaambavan awarded his daughter Jaamabavathy too alongwith the jewel to Krishna .

On his return and entrusting the jewel to Sathraajith , the latter repented for his baseless allegations against Krishna and awarded his daughter Sathya to him in marriage . Sathya was a brave woman . She once accompanied and assisted Krishna in his campaign against Naraka of Praagjyothisham .

Her conversation with Droupadi when they met in the forest is a well known one . It was during this chat that Droupadi mildly reprimanded her for her unseemly estimation of Droupadi's abilities and strageties as an able and pious house-wife of five powerful husbands.

The story in the Harivamsham about Krishna's bringing the divine tree Paarijaatham for her is a famous subject of many poetical works . However, her role in Mahaabhaaratham is very less . Again, her mention was made in Udyoga parva, when Krishna and Arjuna with Sathya and Droupadi beside them gave an audience toSanjaya, as was reported by the later to Dhritharaashtra.

After Krishna's leaving this world, Arjuna took her alongwith other women and Dvaaraka's population to Kurukshethram. There he told her about Krishna's departure. She heard the news with dignified grief and retired to forests for penance.
