KURUKSHETHRAM

( the KSH in this name is pronounced like 'ctio' in 'action' and 'th' like 'th' in 'with'.)

Kurukshethram was the name of the area at which the great war of Mahaabhaaratham occured. It got its name from Kuru, one of the ancestors of Paandavas. His clan also became known after his name as kouravas. Many wars were fought at that place. Some examples- the fighting between chithraangada, the Gandharva and Chithraangada, the cousin of Bheeshma; between Parashuraama and Bheeshma; between Parashuraama and many kings etc.

The great war of Mahaabhaaratham went for 18 days with a total army of 18 akshohinis on either side. As very few as eleven people survived that terrific war. In kurukshethram, a particular area was called Shamanthapanchakam or Samanthapanchakam. this was the place where Parasguraama propitiated his manes by offering homages with the blood of his enemies by making five pools of that blood. That area is still considered to be a holy place.
