HASTHIPURAM ( Also written as Hasthinaapuram or Haasthinapuram)

( the S in this name is pronounced like 's' in 'sun' and 'th' like 'th' in 'with'.)

Hasthipuram was the name of the capital city of the kuru kings. The city got its name from its founder Hasthi , one of the earlies kings of their dynasty. The epic variously refers to this city as Gajasaahvayam or Naagasaahvayam (='city named like elephant') etc.

After the war, Paandavas ruled from this original capital Hasthipuram . Before their renunciation , Paandavas installed their grandson Pareekshith at Hasthipuram .

Most of the scholars associate the modern Delhi with this ancient city, but some references in the epic stand against that proposition. For example, many a time, it was referred that the rulers of the city went to Ganga nearby. Actually, Ganga was not near modern Delhi. But some references in Mahaabhaagavatham support that the city was situated near the river Yamuna, like the modern Delhi.
