DURVAASAS

( the D in the beginning of this name is pronounced like 'th' in 'brother')

Durvaasas, was a sage of great powers obtained from his penance and meditation. He was very irate and even the sages and gods dreaded him.

Kunthi, the mother of the Paandavas was originally named Pritha. She was the daughter of Shoora and younger sister of Vasudeva. She was given in adoption to king Kunthibhoja ( a person named Kunthi in the clan of Bhojas ) whence she was called Kunthi. She was maternal aunt to Krishna.

While she was at her adopted father's house, she hosted hospitality to this irate sage Durvaasas for a considerable period subject to his trying conditions,to his satisfaction . As a token of his pleasure from her service,he awarded her a divine chant by employing which she could invite any god of her chance to beget a son from him.It was this chant that played a crucial role in the story. When her husband had no chance of getting sons from her on his own, she took the helpof this chant to invite the gods Yama, Vaayu and Indra to get three sons Yudhishthira, Bheema and Arjuna. She awarded that chant to her co-wife Maadri also, who invited the divine doctor gods Asvinis to get twin sons Nakula and Sahadeva.

Sometimes, some things done by the great people have their own purpose in the world. Otherwise, how could such a wise sage give such an uncanny powerful divine chant to an unmarried tender-aged girl !

Once he went to Duryodhana who treated him very well and cunningly requested him to visit his cousins Paandavas too who were in the forests and bless them for his satisfaction, only with the idea that the poor hospitality available in the forests would make the sage angry and a severe curse would be inflicted on his troubled cousins. The sage went to the Paandavas after their dinner was over and ordered for food for him and his ten thousand disciples. Paandavas were in real trouble but Krishna came to their rescue.
