CHITHRASENA

(The CH in this name is pronounced like 'ch' in 'much'. The TH is pronounced like 'th' in 'with'. The N is pronounced like 'n' in 'nut'.)

There are more than one character with this name in the Mahaabhaaratham.

1.CHITHRASENA , the gandharva.

Chithrasena was a Gandharva . He was Arjuna's colleague while he was attending the gods in the heaven . He taught music and dance to Arjuna upon the advice of Indra .

He again appeared in the story a few years later when he captured Duryodhana on being sent by Indra who learnt that he came to the forest to tease and insult the Paandavas in exile by exposing his grandeour before them.

The servants of Duryodhana fled to Yudhishthira and begged him for rescuing their king. Yudhishthira sent Arjuna and bheema to get their cousin released. They obliged - though unwillingly - and at first urged Chithrasena to let Duryodhana go free but the request was not heedded. A terrible fight followed that ended in Arjuna's favour.

Finally, Chithrasena took his captives to Yudhishthira and the latter prevailed upon him to let his cousin free. That was done and Chithrasena left them for his abode.

Also mention was made of a gandharva chief of the same name in Virrata Parva, in the context of the Northern cow-sieze, who remarked to Indra about the valour of Arjuna and Bheeshma. We cannot surely say that the name refers to the same person.

2.CHITHRASENA, a warrior on the kouravas side.

In the battle between the kouravas and Arjuna on the occassion of formers' seizing king Viraata's cows on the northern side of the Viraata city, he attacked Arjuna in the first instance, alongwith Sangraamajith, Shathrusaha and Jaya, who of course, were killed in a single stroke by Arjuna.

3. CHITHRASENA, one of the hundred kouravas. One of the hundred sons of Dhritharaashtra was named chithrasena.
