BABHRUVAAHANA

Babhruvaahana was one of Arjuna's sons. He was born to Arjuna and Chithraangada. He belonged to Manipuram in the Southern part of our country.

While the Paandavas were ruling independently from Indraprastham, Naarada visited them and advised about their courting with their common queen Droupadi. Since many disputes have women as their source, he warned them not to give scope for such internal disputes due to women and suggested that Droupadi might live with every one of the Paandava brothers by turns, for a term of one year each. The Paandavas agreed for the suggestion and imposed a condition opon themselves that he who intrudes into the other's house while the latter was with Droupadi, should go on tours of pilgrimage for twelve years (The Thelugu translation took it as twelve months.).

The rule was well followed for some years. Once a Braahmana approached Arjuna crying for help reporting that his cattle were forcibly taken away by some thieves. In a hurry of helping the Braahmana in crisis, Arjuna went into Yudhishthira's palace to take his weapons, as the palace was near by. The cows were restored to the Braahmana. Arjuna wanted to abide by the condition of their imposition and undertook pilgrimage for twelve years.

During the course of that penitentiary tour, Arjuna married three women.

1.) When he was taking rest on the Banks of Ganha, a naaga lady Uloopi fell for him and took him to her abode Paathaalam. There, she disclosed herself and married him. A son named Iraavaan was born to them. He lived with his mother. During the war, he fought for his father and was killed on the twelfth day of the battle by a demon named Alambusa.

2.) In the Manipuram province, the king Chithravaahana offered his daughter Chithraangada to Arjuna in marriage, however, on the condition that the son born to his daughter should be given to him in adoption. Arjuna agreed and married chithraangada. A son was named Babhruvaahana was born to them. Arjuna left his son with his grandfather and went on his tour. Thus, Babhruvaahana too did not become heir apparant to the Paandavas.

Babhruvaahana did not participate in the war. Later, after the war, at the time of Yudhishthira's Ashvamedham, Arjuna went around guarding the sacrificial horse and reached Manipuram. Babhruvaahana welcomed Arjuna obediently but Arjuna chided him for not opting to fight heroically against him. Forced by Arjuna and encouraged by Arjuna's Naaga wife Uloopi, Babhruvaahana started battle with hs father. During the fight, Arjuna fell dead, hit by his son.Everybody was sad but Uloopi vivified Arjuna with the power of a divine gem that the Naagas exclusively possess. Later, she clarified that all that was done due to the Curse of Ganga and Vasus inflicted on Arjuna for immorally killing the grandsire Bheeshma in the war.

Babhruvaahana sent off his father and later attended Yudhishthira's Ashvamedham where he was received by everyone with love.

Not beyond this much is mentioned about him in the epic.
