DEDICATED TO MY DEAR NIECE VYSHNAVI KRISHNA

VRITHRA

(The ri in this name is the peculiar vowel sound resembling the sound of R, like ri in 'krishna'. The th is pronounced like th in 'with'.)

Please see the links 'thvashta' and 'vishvaroopa' also.

Vishvaroopa was the son of a prajaapathi named Thvashta. (See the links 'Thvashta' and 'prajaapathi'.). He was very rich in penances. Indra killed him fearing danger to his position from him. Due to that Indra became blemished with sin and he later got rid of it. Thvashta was very angry with Indra again, for killing innocent Vishvaroopa. He created a gigantic demon Vrithra and sent thim to kill Indra. Vrithra defeated Indra forcing him to come to terms through the sages. Vrithra imposed a stringent condition to accept Indra's truce proposal. That was it that any weapon that is metalic or woodden or earthen, human or divine, enchanted or normal, dry or wet , during day or night should not be able to kill him. Indra accepted the condition but he found a chance oneday when vrithra was moving around the sea shore at the time of sun-set. Indra smeared the sea-surf to the tip of his bolt and hit Vrithra with that. Thus, Vrithra was killed at a time that was neither day nor night, with a weapon neither wet nor dry. Vrithra's murder made Indra lose his position. He regained it with great effforts.
