SYRANDHRI

( the D in this name is pronounced like a hardened 'th' in 'brother')

Syrandhri was the name of a femanine profession adopted by some women who worked in royal palaces as maid-servants. They had certain rules to follow and those rules were honoured by their masters too. The rules included fasting, leading an austere life, not eating left-overs, not undertaking the works below the standards of decent conduct etc. Syrandhris took care of the cosmetic needs of the queens and princesses. They also guide and assist the young royal ladies in customs and practices.

In Mahabharatham, we come across 2 prominent persons adopting this profession, both in the times of their hardships. The prime person was Droupadi during their thirteenth year of exile when she adopted the name of Maalini and worked at Viraata's queen Sudeshna as syrandhri. That,of course, lead to certain unhappy developments.

The second such instance was the similar situation when queen Damayanthi of king Nala in his absence adopted syrandhri profession ( unknowingly in her very maternal aunt's house ) until she met him again.

It seems it was common those days for women of decent character to adopt that profession when they needded to support themselves for certain reasons.
