The word 'surabhi' in general means a 'cow' but Surabhi refers to the divine cow Kaamadhenu(the cow that gives the desired) named Surabhi. It has four calves, Suroopa, Vishvaroopa, Hamsila and Sarvakaamadugha . It is said that all the cows originated from surabhi. Nandini is one of the descendednts of this lineage. She stayed with sage Vasishtha and caused Vishvaamithra's greed over it.
