S O U P T H I K A - P A R V A

The word 'soupthika' means 'of or relating to 'suptha'(=asleep)'.In this parva, it is described how Ashvaththaama masacres the sleeping camp of the pandavas. The main incidents are - Ashvaththaama's intention of killing the enemies while they were asleep, his going to the enemy camp with Kripa and Krithavarma, Ashvaththaama's accosting with Lord Shiva, Ashvaththaama's self-sacrifice to please Shiva, Shiva's boon and gifting of a sword to Ashvaththaama, Ashvaththaama's killng of Dhrishtadyumna,Shikhandi,Uththamoujas, Yudhaamanyu,Junior Paandavas and others, the trio's meeting the dying Duryodhana, Duryodhana's end, Bheema and Arjuna's chasing of Ashvaththaama, Ashvaththaama's using brahmasiras asthra against the paandavas and Uththara's foetus, Arjuna's snatching of Ashvaththaama's crown-jewel, Krishna's consoling of Yudhishthira explaining about Lord Shiva's greatness.
