SOMA ( A creeper used in sacrifices)

( The S in this name is pronounced like 's' in 'soap'.)

Soma was the name of a creeper used in sacrifices. It is squeezed through a procedure and the juice id offered to gods. it is drunk by the performers of the sacrifices and participants. We use the Soma in our document to mean both the creeper and its juice.

It was a custom of the sacrificial practice to bring the creeper soma with a meticulously followed procedure. It was cut, brought, washed, suqeezed and its juce was eatracted all through the chanting of particuar hymns of the veda. Its juice was taken by the performers and participants of the sacrifices. It was believed that drinking its juice in a sacrifice would burn all one's sins.

The creeper is now extinct and as a substitute, the creeper 'Gudoochi' is used.

"After praying to Naaraayana, Nara, Sarasvathi and Vyaasa, then one should recite the Jayam."
