SOMA (or CHANDRA)

(The S in this name is pronounced like 's' in 'so'.)

Please see the link 'lakshmi' and 'soma1' too.

Soma or Chandra refers to the moon god (A creeper used in sacrifices is also called Soma ; it is now extinct.). Vedic hymns praise soma too. He is the Lord of all braahmanas and herbs of all types. Budha is his son.

According to our mythology, Chandra, Lakshmi, ambrosia, firy poison, apsaras, kalpa tree, Kousthubha gem, divine cow Kaamadhenu, divine elephant Ayraavatham, divine horse Uchchyshravam etc were born out of the milk-sea, when it was churned by the god and demons for ambrosia .

Our mythologysays about two prominent lineages of kings, one originating from the sun god and the other originating from the Moon god. Paandavas belong to the Moon dynasty. Abhimanyu was the incarnation of Moon's son Varchas. Our phylosophy says that Moon is the master of the mind.

In astrology, Moon is given a place among the nine planets. The mythology says that Moon is the husband of the twenty seven stars (all from the fifty daughters of Daksha) and that he spends one night with each of them and also that he is fond of Rohini among them. This only corresponds to the astrological movement of moon through the twenty seven stars in a span of thirty days.

All the nine planets are, Sun, Moon, Kuja, Budha(Moon's son), Guru (Brihaspathi), Shukra, shani (Sun's son),Raahu and Kethu (both demons.). It is said that lunar eclipse is caused when Raahu swallows moon. But many of Indian astrolgers clearly explained the phenomenon of exlipse in our modern scientific sense.
