Sindhu was one of the provinces in ancient India. Now it is in Pakistan.
Also, Sindhu is the name of a river too. This river flows through Pakistan.
In Samskritham, a province is named after its inhabitants and used always in plural. thus, in our translation, the name of a country used with plural ending indicates the people or fighters of that land. As far as possible, green letters are used when we meant the province and blue letters are used when we meant people or fighters of that country.
The word sindhu refers to many things - a river, an ocean, a province, a race and a clan of rulers of that country too. In ancient India, this province produced class steeds and hence a horse is generally referred to as 'Syndhava' , meaning 'of or from Sindhu'. Also, the word Syndhava refers to the king of that country, especially to Jayadratha, who was many times alluded by this name .
In Ashvamedha parva, a battle between Arjuna and Sindhu rulers was described. Jayadratha's grandson was then a boy. Jayadratha's son heard the news of Arjuna's coming and fell collapsed dead on the floor, out of fear and grief. His mother brough her young grand-son before Arjuna and talked successfully for peace and protection.
