PUSHKARA

Also see the link 'varuna' and 'nala'.

( The SH in this name is pronounced like 'sh' in 'ship'. )

Pushkara is Lord Varuna's son. Varuna is the lord of waters, the West direction and also the underworld.

Another person with the same name was king Nala's cousin who defeated him in dice game and snatched his kingdom.Nala's story comes in Aaranya parva, related by sage Brihadashva to Yudhishthira.

Also, Brihaspathi's son named Pushkara is said to acquire possession of waters of the twelve principal rivers one by one, residing in them for a term of one year each, thereby repeating the cycle of stay for every twelve years. That occasion of Pushkara's residing in the river waters causes a celebration of pious baths in that river that year. That is named Pushkara ablution. The Pushkara of a river is decided by Brihaspathi's occupation of a particular constellation, eg, Brihaspathi (or Guru planet ) in Kanya means Pushkara of river Krishna occurs that year.
