PRAJAAPATHI

Also see the link 'brahma'. Brahma is generally named Prajaapathi in our mythology.

Prajaapathi is the name of a position held by Brahma's sons. Prajaapathi means 'progenitor' ie 'one who creates'.

They were mentioned as twenty one in the very first chapter of Aadi parva itself. Some of them are : 1.Mareechi or Mareecha, 2.Athri, 3.Angiras, 4.Pulasthya, 5.Pulaha, 6.Krathu. 7.Kashyapa. 8. Daksha. (Still some are counted among these, Thvashtri etc).

However, their number and names appear variously. Many other were quoted as prajaapathis. For example, Thvashta or Thvashtri was also a prajaapathi. Some consider Thvashta in stead of Naarada.

According to our Puraanams, the creator Brahma wanted to expand the creation in many ways. He created many sons from his body and mind and entrusted to them the responsibility of creation and expansion of the universes. But, Naarada preferred penance and he took to it. The other prajaapathis created the various living beings, non-living things, mobile and immobile beings of the universes. The details of creation will be updated in the link 'brahma'.

A male named Daksha and a female named Dharani ( or Dhaarini )were born from the big toes of Brahma's right and left feet respectively. From these two, the creation was done. Daksha and Dharani first had a thousand sons but they did not take part in creation, preferring penance. Later, Daksha had fifty daugters. From them, he gave twenty seven ( Ashvini to Revathi) to Chandra ie Moon god, thirteen to Kashyapa ( See the link Kashyapa) and ten to Dharma. Kashyapa was the prajaapathi who primarily expanded the creation through his thirteen wives. Among his ten wives, Adithi gave birth to Aadithyas or gods, Dithi gave birth to Dythyas ( a sect of demons), Danu gave birth to Daanavas ( a sect of demons), Vinatha gave birth to Anooru and Garuda, Kadru gave birth to Serpents. Other wives gave birth to Apsaras, Siddhaas etc.
