PRAAGJYoTHISHAM

( The syllabilic division of the name is like this - PRAAG-JYO-THI-SHAM . The G is pronounced like g in big, J is pronounced like j in jug, Y - a consonant here - is pronounced like y in you, the TH is pronounced like th in with and the SH is pronounced like sh in shut.)

Praagjyothisham is the name of principal city of Kaamaroopas province.

Kaamaroopa provinces are mentioned many times in the epic and other puraanams. In the Ashvamedha parvas it is mentioned that Arjuna, while following his sacrificial horse reached Kaamaropa province and its capital ciry is Praagjyothisham. That was then under control of rulers of Bhagadaththa's clan. This Kaamaroopa is identified with present Assam and the surroundings.
