NRIGA

( The N in this name is pronounced like n in 'on'. The RI is the peculiar vowel like RI in Kripa and Krishna.)

Nriga was a king. He was of Ikshvaaku dynasty.

Nriga was famous for his sacrifices and virtues. He donated crores of cows to the braahmanas during his sacrifices. His other virtuous deeds too were countless. Once inadvertantly he donated the same cow to two different Braahmanas on two different occasions. Both the Braahmanas were firm in owning the same cow. None would forego that cow even for a ten thousand other cows.

That duplication and donation of somebody's property to others, Nriga was to live the life of a gigantic chameleon in an abandoned well for many years.

During Krishna's period, once some of the Yaadava youth went to a forest and saw a big chameleon in an old well. Out of curiousity, they tried to pull it out from the well. But, they could not do that job. Even hundreds and thousands of people with ropes and pulleys vould not move that creature from the well. They reported the wonder to Krishna who came there and pulled it out of the well with his hand.

Soon after touched by Krishna, the chameleon lost his form and appeared as a resplendent figure adorned with fine attire and ornaents. He disclosed himself as Nriga and told his story to all of the people there.

"After praying to Naaraayana, Nara, Sarasvathi and Vyaasa, then one should read the Jayam."
