(The Y in this name is consonant, pronounced like 'y' in 'you'. )

Maya was the name of the demon-sculptor. He built the vehicles and buildings for the demons. His counter part, Vishvakarma, was the builder and sculptor of mansions, vehicles and maker of weapons to the gods.

Maya took refuge with Arjuna when the later burnt down the forest Khaandavaprastha for the propitiatioon of lord Agni. As a token of his gratitude, Maya constructed a beautiful and magnificient court-house for the Paandavas . The amazing speciality of this magical house was that the things in it appear as they are not there. It was in this mysterious house that Duryodhana confused between water surface and solid land. This mused the Paandavas and Duryodhana was incensed with insult. This hurt his pride and the insult added to his already mounting jealousy against his cousins. That feeling lead to plots and resulted in a great enemity that consumed both sides of their dynasty.

Maya also gave a mace to bheema and a discus to Krishna.

Thus Maya's role, though minor, was very crucial in the story of Mahaabhaaratham.
