Mandara was a large and high mountain mentioned in puraanams. It was with this mountain that the gods and demons churned the milk-sea for nector. Here, often many sages practise their penances. Many celestials and demi-gods move around on tis mountain with their fliers. Arjuna went to observe penance on this mountain to peopitiate Lord Shiva, for obtaining great divine asthras from him.
People believe that Hanumaan lives on this mountain.
