MALAYA

( The 'l' in this name is pronounced like 'l' in 'lip' and 'y' like 'y' in 'you'.)

Malaya is one of the importaint moutains in the southern part of India. It is famous for its abundance in the fragrant and cool sandal trees. Sandal wood is used in all the auspicious and ceremonial rites. The breeze coming from this mountain is said to be cool due the contact with these cool trees. It is evident that a sandal wood piece is felt very cool when we hold it .

The Indian mythology names eight ( some say seven ) such prime mountains which were believed to bear the earth's weight ( i.e. hold it together). They were

  1. Himaalaya
  2. Hemakota
  3. Nishadha
  4. Neela
  5. Svetha
  6. Shringi
  7. Maalyavan
  8. Gandhamaadana
