MAGADHA

( the D in the beginning of this name is pronounced like 'th' in 'brother'.)

MAGADHA was one of the countries in ancient India. It corresponds with part of prsent Bihar. During Mahaabhaaratham period, Magadha was ruled by Jaraasandha, his son Sahadeva and his son Meghasandhi. Girivrajam or Raajagriha was Magadha's capital.

After Bheema killed Jaraasandha, the latter's son Sahadeva fought in the waron behalf of Paandavas. He was killed by Ashvaththaama during the night attack on the 18 th day's night.

After the war, when Arjuna followed the sacrificial horse, Meghasandhi was ruling Magadha. He fought with Arjuna and lost.

In the later periods, Magadha was ruled by the Guptha kings.
