KIRAATHAS

( The TH in this name is pronounced like 'th'in 'with'. The last s shows plural number, as a race is generally referred in plural number. )

Kiraathas were people of one of the many races mentioned in Mahaabhaaratham. They were primely of the barbarian creeds but a region named Kiraatha region near Pippala province was mentioned.

The word Kiraatha also means a person of that creed who lives by hunting and sale of meat.

In the later periods, the word Kiraathas was used to refer to some way-laying tribes.

"After praying to Naaraayana, Nara, Sarasvathi and Vyaasa, then one should read the Jayam."
