KAPILA (or CHAKRADHANU)

(The L in this name is pronounced like the 'l' in 'lip'.) See the link 'bhageeratha' too.

Kapila was a great sage. He was regarded as the incarnation of Vishnu himself. He was the founder of the wellknown school of thought 'Saankhya'. He was also known(rarely mentioned) as Chakradhanu. He was son of Kardama and Devahoothi. He taught the essence of Saankhya to his mother Devahoothi.

When he was engaged in his severe penances, king Sagara's 60000 sons went there in search of their father's sacrificial horse which Indra secretly kept near Kapila's hermitage. They thought him to be the detainer of the horse and offended him. soon Kapila's angry looks burnt them into ashes. It took many generations and the great efforts of an indefatigable Bhageeratha to make their way to the heaven. Details in the link 'bhageeratha'.
