KASHI or VAARANAASHI (City)

Kaashi is a famous and perhaps most holiest city place in Bhaaratham. It is also known as Vaaranaashi. The name Vaaranaashi comes from the two rivers Varana and Ashi (or Asi) flanking the city.

Since long ago, ie from the times when our country was treated as comprising the sixteen great provinces, Kaashi has been famous and wellknown.

Its holiness comes from the presiding deity of the place Shiva, known and worshipped as Kaashi-Vishveshvara.

It is mentioned in Mahaabhaaratham that once Krishna attacked Kaashi and burnt it .
