JEEMOOTHA

( The 'th' in this name is pronounced like 'th' in 'with' .)

Jeemootha was the name of the wrestler killed by Bheema in the city of Viraata. (Another person named Jeemotha was one who found atreasure at Himaalayas and donated it to braahmanas, making the name of the treasure Jeemootham after his name. This is mentioned in Udyoga parva.)

During the fourth month of their stay there, there took place a state sponsored public celebration ( called Brahmothsava ). As a part of celebration of the event , Viraata arranged for an open wrestling competetion . A strong wrestler Jeemootha defeated all the contestants and remained victorious . The king ordered his cook, Bheema in guise , to fight with him . Bheema attempted half heartedly , but made him bite the dust and killed . That earned great fame for Bheema in the city .

Viraata used to make Bheema fight often with some wrestlers for fun . When a good hand among the wrestlers was not available , a fight with an elephant or tiger or lion was arranged .
