JANAKA

( The J in this name is pronounced like 'j' in 'ju'. The N is pronounced like 'n'in 'nut'. )

See also the link Mithila.

Janaka is the title name of the rulers of Videha Province, though they have their own names proper. Mithila is the capital city of Videha region . The region is associated with Raama's story, as his consort Seetha was daughter of Videha ruler, Seeradhvaja, usually known as Janaka. These kings were known to be great scholars of Phylosophy.

Besides Raamaayanam, Mahaabhaaratham and many Puraanams mention the name of Videha, Janaka and Mithila. In Ashvamedha parva, Janaka of Mithila city was mentioned in connection with a phylosophical anecdote. Vyaasa quoted the dialogue between Ashma and Janaka while consoling Yudhishthira.

bhaagavatham mentions that Balaraama stayed at Janaka's palace for some time spending time in discussions on Philosophy.
