GARUDA

( The 'd' in this name is pronounced like 'd' in 'den' .)This name indicates Garuda proper and also the races of birds as a whole but only when used in plural, as 'garudas'. In udyoga parva, many garudas are mentioned by names. Sumukha, sunaama, Sunethra, Suvarchas Suruk and Subala are named as his sons. Also, Sumukha ia the name of a naaga youth whom Garuda wanted to eat but Maathali and Indra saved with the grace of Vishnu and Indra .)

Garuda or Garuthmaan is the king of birds . He is the son of Kashyapa and Vinatha . Kadru is another wife of Kashyapa . She gave birth to numerous strong serpents . Vinatha delivered a pair of eggs which did not hatch even for five hundred years . Impatiently , she broke open an egg and from it was born a bright personality without lower body . He was called Anooru ( one without thighs ) . He was angry with her mother for her silly eagerness causing his handicap and cursed her that she would serve Kadru as a slave for many years . He went as the chariot driver to the Sun . Later , Kadru once defeated Vinatha in a wagger and made the latter a slave to her and her sons . After another five hundred years , the second egg got harched and from it emerged a gigantic bird form with strong golden wings . He was Garuda . Garuda spent many years serving his half-brothers and step mother . Once he carried the serpents on his back and flew high into the sky when the snakes got scalded and fell down . Their mother Kadru got them revitalised by the grace of Indra .

Garuda asked the snakes what would relieve him and his mother of the slavery . They demanded that he should bring the ambrosia from the heaven to get freedom . Garuda did so by defeating the gods and Indra . However, Indra got the ambrosia back before the snakes could consume it . Garuda asked Vishnu to take him as his carrier and flag symbol . The story of Garuda and the Naagas symbolises the natural enemity between the snakes and the eagles .

Also, a group of demi-gods Garudas is mentioned in the Puraanas.

In Udyoga parva, a reference to some prominent people of the Garuda group ie bird race was given by Naarada while describing the inhabitants of Paathaalam to Maathali. They are Suvarnachooda, Naagaashi, Daaruna, Chandathundaka, Anila, Anala, Vishaalaaksha, Kundali, Pankajith, Vajravishkambha, Vynatheya, Vaamana, Vaathavega, Dishachakshu, Nimesha, Animisha, Thriraava, Saptharaava,Vaalmeeki,Dveepaka, Dythyadveepa, Sariddepa, Saarasa, Padmakethana, Sumukha, Chithrakethu, Chithrabarha, Anagha, Meghahrith, Kumuda, Daksha, Sarpaantha, Sahabhojana, Gurubhaara, Kapotha, Sooryanethra, Chiraanthaka, Vishnudharma, Kumaara, Paribarha, hari, Susvara, Madhuparka, Hemavarna, Maalaya, Maatharishva, Nishaakara, Divaakara and many others.
