GANDHAMAADANA

( The N is pronounced like 'n' in 'on'. The 'dh' in this name is pronounced like a hardened sound of 'dh' in 'brother' and the other 'd' is pronounced like 'th' in 'brother'. The other N is also pronounced like the first one.)

Gandhamaadana is one of the prime moutains ( kula-giri's) mentioned in mythology. The Indian mythology names eight ( some say seven ) such prime mountains which were believed to bear the earth's weight ( i.e. hold it together). They were

  1. Himaalaya
  2. Hemakota
  3. Nishadha
  4. Neela
  5. Svetha
  6. Shringi
  7. Maalyavan
  8. Gandhamaadana
.

It is believed that Hanuman resides on the Gandhamaadana. It was here that Bheema fought the demi-gods Yakshas and killed many of them. He met Hanuman on the mountain and got his blessings. When the Paandavas could not pass through the routes on this mountain, Ghatothkacha came to their help.
