In the epic age, birth of people was not necessarily as it is nowadays. As was mentioned in the Mahaabhaaratham itself, births were of various ways, by intention,by look, by touch,
"After praying to Naaraayana, Nara, Sarasvathi and Vyaasa, then one should read the Jayam."
