CHITHRAANGADA

(The CH in this name is pronounced like 'ch' in 'much'. The TH is pronounced like 'th' in 'with'. The D is pronounced like 'th' in 'thus'.)

There are many people,men and women, with this name in the Mahaabhaaratham. We should be careful in identifying the various people with the same name.

1.CHITHRAANGADA , the gandharva.

He was a gandharva. He was challenged by shanthnu's son Chithraangada ( No 2 below) for a fight. They both fought in the kurukshethram. The gandharva killed the prince.

2.CHITHRAANGADA,the son of Shanthanu, half-brother of Bheeshma.

He was very arrogant for his age. He was challenging any body of his choice to a fight. Once he challenged a gandharva ( No 1 above ) with the same as himself. The gandhaeva fought with him in the field of kurukshethram and killed him. Chithraangada died unmarried.

3.CHITHRAANGADA, a warrior on the kouravas side.

In the battle between the kouravas and Arjuna on the occassion of formers' seizing king Viraata's cows on the northern side of the Viraata city, he attacked Arjuna in the first instance, alongwith Sangraamajith, Shathrusaha and Jaya, who ofcourse, were killed in a single stroke by Arjuna.

4. CHITHRAANGADA,Arjuna's wife

She was one of Arjuna's four principal wives. She was daughter of Chithravaahana, the king of Manipuram. She got a son Babhruvaahana who settled at his maternal grandfather alongwith his mother. Chithraangada went back to her father's town after Arjuna went on renunciation.

5. CHITHRAANGADA, king of Kalinga province.

He was the ruler of Kalinga. He was on the kouravas' side in the war.

When his daugter's svayamvaram was diclared, Duryodhana attended that accompanied by Karna. The princess bye-passed Duryodhana without selecting him. Duryodhana became angry with that refusal and he captured her and took away with him in his chariot. Many kings attacked him not tolerating his audacity. But Karna defeated them all and protected his king . It was then that the strong king of Magadha province, Jaraasandha fought with Karna and lost in a hand-to-hand fight. Jaraasandha was pleased with Karna's strength and awarded a city named Maalini to him as a gift.

6. CHITHRAANGADA, king of Dashaarna provinces.

He was the ruler of Dashaarna provinces after the war. He was defeated by Arjuna in his Ashvamedha campaign, a few years after the war.
