BRIHASPATHI

(The RI in this name is the special vowel sound, like RI in 'Krishna'. BRI as a syllable is pronounced nearly like 'br' in 'bring'. The S is pronounced like S in 'so'. The TH is pronounced like TH in 'with'.)

Brihaspathi is a divine sage. He is the son of Angiras. Samvartha is his younger brother. Thaara is his wife. Chandra (moon) is his disciple. Once Thaara fell for Chandra and they had a son Budha. That led to a fight between Brihaspathi and Chandra which subsided with intervention of Brahma.

Brihaspathi is mentor of the Gods. Hence he is known as Guru. He advises Indra in his affairs. He is known for his wisdom and intellect. But he was once jealous of his younger brother Samvartha and teased him in many ways.

Drona was said to be born as a partial incarnation of Brihaspathi.

His counterpart Shukra is mentor of Demons. As Shukra posssessed the knowledge of a chant called Mrithasanjeevani (reviver of the dead), Brihaspathi sent his own son Kacha to learn the chant from him. Kacha was successful but that lead to many twists.

Interestingly, in Astrology, two planets are named after these two sages, Guru and Shukra, both being prominent and poweful. Even today, a wise man is compared to Brihaspathi.

Stories relating him are told in many puraanams.

"After praying to Naaraayana, Nara, Sarasvathi and Vyaasa, then one should read the Jayam."
