BRIHANNALA

( ARJUNA )

(The RI in this name is not a consonant. It is the special vowel sound like 'ri' in 'krishna' or 'kripa'. The 'N's are pronounced like 'n' in 'null'.)

See the link arjuna too.

This was the name taken by Arjuna , who assumed the form of a eunuch during the 13 th year of exile incognito. With this name , he spent the year as a teacher of dance and music to Viraata's daughter, princess Uththara .

In that guise,he also went as prince Uththara's charioteer in the campaign to defend the herds of cows from the incursion of Kouravas. When the young prince turned pusillanimous by the glimpse of the enemy's gigantic army, Brihannala emboldened him and took on the fight himself to win. As a symbol of his victory, he brought the turbains of the enemies as dollmakers to his student princess Uththara.

After his disclosure, the king offered his daughter to him in marriage, but he proposed her to his son in stead, thereby showing his clean attitude towards a young woman who had spent one year with him in close quarters.
