BRAHMA

Please see the links 'prajaapathi', 'vishnu' and 'Shiva' too.

Brahma is the creator of the universe. He is son of Vishnu. He is the first of trio Brahma (creator), Vishnu (protector) and Shiva (destroyer i.e. withdrawas the entire creation).

It is said that Brahma came out from the lotus that emanated from Vishnu's navel. His abode is called Sathyam or Sathyaloka which is the highest of the fourteen worlds. His consort Sarasvathi is the goddess of knowledge and learning. All the created started with him. Many prajaapathis born out of his body proliferated the creation of various living and non-living beings. The famous divine sage Naarada is his son.

It is common in our Puraanams that Brahma gets pleased with the penances of some demon and gives him terrific boons with the power of which the demon troubles the worlds, especially the celestials, when Vishnu takes care of the trouble and weeds out that demon.

Our puraanams say that to reach his abode is very difficult and it is within the reach of only pure and great souls. all te gods, demi-gods and sages visit him regularly and serve him with devotion. He is the symbol for the quality Rajas, of the three viz. Sathva (Vishnu), Rajas(Brahma) and Thamas (Shiva). He is the ruling deity of a powerful asthra named Brahma-asthra which is said to have the power of consuming everything in the creation if not properly employed.

Now, we give hereunder a brief sketch of the creation of the beings as is given in our puraanams.
Brahma is the starting point who, of course was said to have come from a lotus that originated from Vishnu's navel. Brahma's sons are prajaapathis and creation expands from the Prajaapathia and Manus. Remember, the names and sequence widely differ from text to text and one puraanam to another puraanam.
