BADARI or BADARIKA

(The D in this name is pronounced like 'th' in 'thus'. The last RI is a consonant sound pronounced like 'ri' in 'rip'. Similar pronounciations in the alternative name too. In the original Samskritham, the ending is a long one like 'ree' or 'kaa'.)

Badari or Badarika is one of the great forests of ancient India. It was on the feet of Himaalayas. The ancient sages used to observe penance here .

Our Puraanams say that the two great duo of sages Nara and Naaraayana kept observing penance in this forest. this is a very holy place where the deity is Vishnu known as Badaree-Naaraayana.

Other great forests were, Dandaka, Champa,Dvytha,Kaamyaka , Madhu,Nymisham,Daaruka, Kedaara etc (In fact, fourteen such great forests were mentioned in our books) . Only the Dandaka forest in South India exists now, albeit cut in by modern civilization. Other forests like Nymisha and Champa exist but nominally.
