AVAKEERNI

( The N is pronounced hard like N in 'turn'or in 'morning'.)

A person failing in observing the strict rules of Brahmacharyam is named Avakeerni. The word literally means 'one that has dropped down or fallen down'.

As we mentioned in our introduction, Brahmacharyam is not exactly the same as celibecy in English. It applies wholely to unmarried students and partly, in a different way, to married ones in domesticity too.

Brahmacharyam is the system of life prescribed for a student of Vedas. Company with women is the most prohibited thing in his conduct. If at all he happens to have enjoyed sensual pleasures with women while he was under Brahmacharyam, he is derided as a sinner named Avakeerni. To liberate himself from that sin, he is required to perform certain expiations. Undergoing for six months the expiations prescribed for the sin of slaying a Braahmana is the remedy to an avakeerni. There are some others like Garabha-Ishti etc.
