KAARTHVEERYA ( Arjuna, son of Krithaveerya)

( Also, see link Arjuna1.html .)

( The TH in this name is pronounced like 'th'in 'with'. The Y is a consonant pronounced like 'y' in 'you'. In his father's name Krithaveerya , the RI is a special vowel like RI in 'Krishna'. TH and Y are pronounced the same way as above. )

Arjuna was his real name. He was better known as Kaarthaveerya or Kaarthaveeryaarjuna because he was son of Krithaveerya. He was a king of the Hehaya dynasty. His capital was Maahishmathi.

Kaarthaveerya was a staunch devotee of Daththa or Daththaathreya who himself was an incarnation of Vishnu. From Daththaathreya's grace, he obtained a form with thousand hands and unmatched prowess. He was in want of a matching fighter for his valour.

Once Kaarthaveerya was playing in the river Narmada (Reva) with his queens. As a sport, he obstructed the flow of the river with his thousand hands. The reversed flow of the river disturbed the Raakshasa king Raavana's worship on the banks at that time. The demon king of twenty hands and ten heads angrily rushed toeards Kaarthaveerya to punish him. But, Kaarthaveerya caught Raavana by his hair, folded him like a sheet and made him thrown into prison in his capital. But, later, he reprimanded Raavana and let him go safe.

Once, Karthaveerya incidentally went to sage Jamadagni's hermitage. The sage satisfied the king and his large retinue with all varities of royal food items, all obtained with the help of his powerful sacrificial cow in his possession. Kaarthaveerya was surprised at the cow's power. He ordered his men to commandeer the cow. Despite Jamadagni's protests, the king went away with the cow.

Jamadagni's son Raama or Parashuraama returned home and learnt from his father about what had happened. He soon ran on the heels of the king to his capital and warned him to leave the cow or face dire consequences. The king jeered at Parashuraama and responded with an attack against him.

Parashuraama defeated the king's armies. He chopped of all but four of the king's hands. Still, Kaarthaveerya did not surrender. Finally Parashuraama killed him and brought his cow back to his father.

Some of Kaarthaveerya's sons later killed Jamadagni in the absence of Raama. That made Parashuraama frenzy with anger. He annihilated all the Hehaya dynasty. Also, he exterminated Kshathriya races for twenty seven rounds.
