DATHTHAATHREYA

( the D in the beginning of this name is pronounced like 'th' in 'brother'. The TH's are pronounced like 'th' in 'with'.)

Daththaathreya was a sage , son of Athri and Anasooya. He was the greatest of all times among the ascetic mendicants. He was rightly described as an Avadhootha ( absolute ascetic). Tradition says that he was a combined incarnation of the three principal lords Brahma ( creator), Vishnu ( the care-taker of the creation ) and Shiva ( the destroyer of the creation ). But Maarkandeya puraanam explains that the three principal Lords graced Anasooya that she would get the three of them as her sons and acordingly vishnu was born to her as Daththaathreya, Brahma was born as Chandra and Shiva was born as Durvaasas.

He was considered to be the guru of gurus. He graced Arjuna(not one ofthe Paandavas) , the son of Krithaveerya of Hyhaya dynasty (hence known as Kaarthaveeryaarjuna=Arjuna, the kaarthaveerya ), with amazing prowess and valour. But the king prayed that he should be killed by Daththaathreya himself. Accordingly Daththaathreya infused himself into Parashuraama and killed kaarthaveerya . Detailed history of Daththaathreya can be seen in Maarkandeya puraanam.
